Trelle McCombs, the Head Women’s Golf Coach came to speak about the golf program. They have had a lot of successes this year, and it sounds like the program has both great leadership and strong athletes both in the classroom and ont he green. Women’s golf has seven student-athletes on the team this spring with five on scholarship We also received an update from Shalena Brown, the Life Skills and Career Coordinator for the Academic Center. Shalena told us about the CHAMPS program and other programs offered to the Student Athletes to prepare them for life after college. A&M’s CHAMPS Life Skills program was identified in 2004 by the NCAA as a Program of Excellence, so kudos for that! One focus of the CHAMPS program is community involvement. Shalena launched a project this year that all SA are able to participate in with little impact to their schedules. When teams travel, they bring back any unused toiletries from hotels (they are not permitted to raid housekeeping carts) which are then packaged in plastic baggies and donated to local shelters for use by residents. It has been a very successful project that most of the SA have participated in and has benefited the community.
Other than that, there were the usual updates. There were some surveys being administered to find out about the environment that our student athletes are working in.
The student athlete representative talked about Big event and a student athlete talent show coming up.
